Collecting material at the loan desk

Most items in our collections need to be requested in advance and picked up at the information and loan desk.

Accessing the collections

The procedures at the National Library are slightly different from those at other libraries. Here you can read about how to find, order and access the material you are looking for.

Most items in our collections must be ordered in advance and read on site in our reading rooms. In most cases, you will receive an email confirmation when the material is available. You may also be directed to a digital copy or receive a reference image of the material, instead of accessing it at the Library.

Why can't I borrow to take home?

The National Library holds the national copies of Swedish publications, i.e. the copies to be preserved for research. This means that they should last a long time, preferably forever. Therefore, everyone must study the material on site in the Library. Only parts of the foreign collections can be borrowed home.

We have gathered information about what to expect when you are there – about reading rooms, wifi, food and drink, and more.
