At the National Library, you can study our collections of TV, radio, film, music, and video. You need a library card from the National library and must be registered as a user in Svensk Mediedatabas (SMDB).

Computers for audiovisual media

On floor 2, two floors down in the Annex, there are computers specifically designated for viewing our audiovisual collections.

Seating is free, but to access the collections of television, radio, film, music, video and computer games, you must have a research assignment or be conducting research. You need to have both a library card from the National Library of Sweden and be registered as a user in the Swedish Media Database (SMDB) External link, opens in new window..

Information Desk

The Audiovisual Media Information Desk can help you open an account in SMDB and search the collections. It is located next to the computers on floor 2. See when the desk is staffed during opening hours. However, you are always welcome to use the computers during the National Library's regular opening hours.

What is in the Swedish Media Database?

The SMDB contains over ten million hours of audiovisual material. Here are some examples:

  • TV and radio programs broadcast by Swedish Radio, Swedish Television, Utbildningsradion and TV4.
  • TV programs broadcast via the Swedish digital terrestrial network or via satellite broadcasts originating in Sweden.
  • Selected local television and radio broadcasts (community radio, private local radio, cable television and radio newspapers).
  • Films shown in cinemas in Sweden.
  • Videos distributed in Sweden.
  • Swedish phonograms, i.e. published and unpublished sound recordings.
  • Swedish computer games and interactive multimedia with sound or moving images.
