Heaven and Earth, 118v

Two circular pictures in one of the margins of the manuscript are close to the beginning of the Antiquities by Josephus (f. 118v). This begins by quoting the opening of the book of Genesis, and the pictures illustrate the start of the Creation story.

Heaven is at the top, blue with stars, the sun and the moon. Earth is below shown as green oceans before the earth was formed. Between the two the red capital letters are for the opening of Josephus, In principio (In the beginning), but the first letter (I) was not made.
