Access School Library Statistics

On this page, you can view and download statistics on Sweden’s school libraries.

The National Library of Sweden collects school library statistics annually through a survey covering all school libraries. Since 2024, school library statistics have been collected and reported separately from other library statistics.

What the school library statistics include

The 2025 school library statistics provide information on, among other things:

  • The physical location of the school library
  • The number of staff hours in a typical week, including breakdowns by school unit and educational background
  • Physical (analogue) collections per school library, including the number of copies and titles

The most recent school library statistics are presented below. Highlights from the compilation are presented first, followed by statistical tables reports containing the entire statistics. Since these statistics are official, they are regulated under the Official Statistics Act (2001:99).

  • 94 per cent of students have access to a school library, which is on par with 2024.
  • 88 per cent of students have access to a staffed school library, compared to 80 per cent in 2024.
  • The average staffing level at school libraries is 16 hours per week, compared to 14 hours in 2024.*

  • 91 per cent of students have a school library located on their school premises.
