Statistics from previous years
If you would like to view statistics from previous years, go to the National Library of Sweden’s list of publications (in Swedish) External link.. From 2015 to 2023, school library statistics were included in the compilation of statistics for other types of libraries.
What the library statistics include
The library statistics provide information on, among other things:
- the number of loans, downloads, and purchases of various types of media
- the number of in-person and online visits
- opening hours
- the number of organised activities
- the number of employees, as well as their gender distribution
Examples of information not included in the statistics:
- how many books are published in Sweden. See the National Library of Sweden’s annual statistics on book publishing (in Swedish)
- the number of loans for individual books or authors, such as Sweden’s most borrowed book. You can find this in the Swedish Authors’ Fund’s archive (in Swedish). External link.
- which foreign languages have the highest number of loans
- how many individual people borrow e-books, or what percentage of these loans are audiobooks
Preliminary and final statistics
As soon as the first responses are received, preliminary statistics are published, on an ongoing basis, for each responding library organisation. You can access these responses in the library statistics database (in Swedish) External link.. The data is also available as linked open data via the National Library of Sweden’s APIs.
The final statistics for public, academic, hospital and special libraries are published in May each year. In the library statistics database, you can generate activity reports, covering up to three years, for individual libraries.
