The Newspaper Reading Room

The Newspaper Reading Room is located on floor 1, at the bottom of the library's Annex.

Here you will find Swedish newspapers. Large parts of the collection can be accessed digitally through the Swedish Newspapers serrvice (in Swedish) External link, opens in new window.. Material that is not digitized can be accessed on microfilm. You do not need a library card to use what is in the Newspaper Reading Room and it is open during our regular opening hours.

The Newspaper Reading Room also contains:

  • Swedish-American and Finnish-Swedish newspapers on microfilm.
  • A small number of foreign newspapers on microfilm.
  • A selection of journals on microfilm.
  • Telephone directories published in Sweden.
  • A reference library with Swedish press index, Swedish newspaper articles and similar.

How does it work?

There are a number of computers in the reading room where you have direct access to the Swedish Newspapers service. In addition to these, there are so-called microfilms, a kind of film reel with images, from even more newspapers. These are displayed on open shelves and you can retrieve them yourself. No requests need to be placed in advance.

You can print articles and email pages from both the microfilm readers and the computers. If you want to print on paper, you need a copy card, which you can buy at the Information and Loans Desk.

Do you need help?

If you need help, we usually have staff in the reading room on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 09–16, Wednesdays 09–19 and Saturdays 11–15.

Cannot find what you are looking for?

The National Library stores all newspapers from 1850 onwards in their original form in the National Library's Depository in Bålsta. If you cannot find a newspaper in the Newspaper Reading Room, you are welcome to read it there. Always contact the Library staff if you plan a visit. Newspapers older than 1850 are available at the Library in Humlegården.
