Svensk mediedatabas (SMDB) is the National library's search service for Swedish radio, television, music, film, video, computer games and multimedia.
Everyone can search SMDB without logging in. However, to view and listen to the material, you must have a specific research task. In such cases, you can apply for an account in SMDB.
How to use the Swedish Media Database (SMDB)

You can search freely without being logged in. After a search, you can filter the hits by media type: TV, radio, phonograms/records, phonograms (older), film/video, multimedia or text.
You will also see a chart showing the years where there are hits for your search. Click on the chart to limit your search to a specific year.
Under the Utökad sökning (Advanced search) button, you can specify your search even further. There you can search in several fields at once, for example title, year and media type.
In most cases, it is sufficient to perform a free text search and narrow it down. But if you want to do more advanced searches, please read our search tips on the SMDB website.

Orders can be placed from any computer, if you are logged into your SMDB account. To play material, however, you need to be present at the National library in Stockholm or at an interlibrary loan library.
If the material you are looking for is digitised, you can play it directly at the National library. You will then see a symbol with the text Spela upp (Play) next to the material.
Otherwise, you will need to order a digitisation. It can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks before the order is ready. Use the symbol with the text Beställ (Order).
If you want to borrow material remotely, you always have to order the material, which is then sent on a DVD to your library.
Remote access for researchers
Researchers and research students can also get remote digital access to material in the SMDB. To do so, you must be affiliated with a university or college, a government agency carrying out research and development work or a government research institute.
