Johannes Bureus

Sumlen (Fa 12)

Fa 12 is Royal (National) Librarian Johannes Bureus’s enormous notebook, which he called "Sum(b)len", and once even called my book of scribbles. It is an octavo volume bound in a parchment page taken from a medieval Latin manuscript. It now contains more than 700 pages. Sumlen was probably begun in 1599 and the last dated entry was written in 1648, the year Bureus turned 80. Its contents include travel accounts, impressions, transcripts, and folktales, as well as a great many fragmentary thoughts, some of have yet to be interpreted.
