The Sheaf Catalog
Plåten
Background
The National Library has several catalogs. Those that are most used are LIBRIS, the local catalog Regina, and the pre-1955 catalogue, which is also known as Plåten [Lit. "The Plate"]. Plåten is a sheaf catalog for material printed from 1501 through 1955. It has been in use since the second half of the 19th century, and is severely worn.
Purpose of the project
The purpose of the project is to create and safeguard a digital copy of the current Plåten catalog and then preserve and store the physical catalog. A digital copy of all the Plåten cards will be produced and made available via a web application that will allow users to scroll through the cards. Plåten consists of two catalogs, an alphabetical catalog and a systematic catalog, both of which will be digitized. The alphabetical catalog will be digitized first.
Internally at the National Library, this digitalization process will facilitate both the presentation work and efforts associated with searchability. Externally, researchers and other users will be able to access the Plåten material without having to be on site.
Launch
Once the alphabetical catalog has been digitized and the web application implemented at the National Library, it will be launched for external use. This could take place in March 2009.
