De arte phisicali et de cirurgia

John Arderne, X 118

The English doctor John Arderne’s 15th century textbook in surgery and medicine, was written on a long sheet of sewn-together parchment, which is rolled into a scroll for storage. Fully extended, the manuscript is 5.4 meters long. In addition to that shown here, the manuscript contains another four large anatomical illustrations: one showing the skeleton, one of the circulatory system, one of the central nervous system, and one of the internal organs in a dorsal cross-section. These illustrations are not remarked upon in the text. The various ailments and their cures are instead illustrated by small pictures to the left and right of the text.
