Josephus Portrait

Josephus Portrait, 118r

There is a standing man in the margin of a page which contains the beginning of the Antiquities (f. 118r). The Antiquities is a history of the Jewish people from the beginning of the world to 66 AD. It was a popular work that was read throughout the middle ages.

The bearded man is not identified in any inscription.  It is probably a portrait of the author of the Antiquities — Flavius Josephus who lived in the first century AD. The man is wearing a pointed hat, and this was a common convention in medieval art for showing Jews. As Josephus was a Jew, the man is most likely to be a portrait of the author.

This is the only portrait of a person in the whole of the Codex Gigas.
